Computing Facilities

Computing Facilities in the DHT for postgraduate students

There are currently three rooms with computers in them available to postgraduate students in the David Hume Tower. These are:

  • 1.18 on the first floor
  • 5.11 on the 5th floor
  • 11.11 on the 11th floor

They now have a code access system. (Users who still have entry cards from 2006 and earlier can get their deposits back from the LHC.) The number can be obtained from the Language & Humanities Centre Enquiries desk or from Fiona Carmichael in the basement, opposite the Copy Shop. The rooms are accessible 24/7, although you may require a key to the DHT to be able to use this facility. Keys are handed out from the LHC for a deposit of £10.

The software provided is similar to that in public access labs in the Main Library and elsewhere, but there is space to lay out books and they are generally quieter.

There are printers in all three rooms connected to the University's system for print pre-payment. However, there is also a laser printer downstairs in the LHC which is not, so you can still print there if there is a problem with your pcounter balance. Printing is 4p per sheet, payable on collection.

Help is provided by Fiona Carmichael on ext. 50 3972 (F.Carmichael@ed.ac.uk), or from the HSS Support team on 51 3000. Requests for paper for the printer, etc, should be made to Fiona, or, if she is unavailable, at the Enquiries desk in the LHC.
