Language and Humanities Centre
On-site Facilities
The Language and Humanities Centre, located in the basement of the
DHT, consists of a suite of four teaching and self-study rooms along
with other support areas, as listed below. These rooms may be booked
by staff from the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, for
classes, by contacting Barbara Brown or Teale Failla on 503974 or email

Lab 1
This is a self-study room equipped with seventeen individual vhs video
recorders, DVD players and televisions, all available for private study.
The 17 televisions are also connected to
our satellite dishes and give a selection of live foreign language
channels, Italian, French, German, Chinese, Arabic, Portuguese and
Spanish. Other languages may be available on request. This self-study
room is available to students between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday
to Friday.
Lab 2
This is equipped with a 20 booth digital language laboratory, which is
used mainly for language teaching. However students may use it on
individual access to work on audio materials held on the language
laboratory file server. It can also be used as a teaching room for up
to 20 students and has a 42" widescreen surround sound television,
DVD, VHS, audio cassette player and CD replay facilities. The
television can also display normal UK and satellite television
channels.
Seminar Room
This has seating for up to 15 students, and is equipped with an LCD
projector and a laptop, a 7ft x 5ft screen. Audio, video and DVD replay
facilities are all available.
Lecture Theatre
The Lecture Theatre is laid out cinema style, for 60 students. It has
large screen television projection on to an 8ft x 6ft screen and surround
sound. Can be used with video, DVD, UK and satellite television. This is
also equipped with a laptop and LCD projector.
Library
The library has a stock of about 6,000 video and dvd films and
documentaries available, either purchased or recorded from satellite
or terrestrial television, available in various languages, for self
study and teaching.

It also has a large collection of audiotapes, again in various languages. Tape sales etc., photocopying, binding and FAX
facilities are also available. Printouts by users of the ArtLAN
Computing rooms can also be collected from the library.
Multi-media room
This room is equipped with video editing facilities, both conventional
video to video and by using video editing facilities on PC. Copies can
be made to CD, VHS or DVD once completed. We are also able to produce
colour printouts and OHPs from video clips for presentations. A slide
copier and a scanner are also available for use. Technical staff are
available to give help if required and a booking system is in place
for the use of this room.
We also have a small technical area where Technical staff are
available to assist with audio-visual and computing problems and tape
copying/editing.
Other facilities
Audio-visual and computing equipment is available on loan for teaching,
free of
charge. Equipment includes a 28" television/dvd/vhs trolley
(DHT only), 2 laptop computers, Mini DV camcorders, Hi8 camcorders, dvd
players/recorders, vhs recorders, microphones, cassette/cd/radio
portables, OHP's slide projectors, screens and an LCD data projector.

Blank audiotapes, videotapes, miniDV tapes, batteries, floppy discs,
CD's, DVD's, Zip discs and film are all available to purchase, either
by using an internal order or cash, to staff and students. A full list

We also offer copy services, audio duplication (3 cassettes copied in
under 2 minutes), a 5 x CD copier, a 5 X DVD copier and VHS copies. We can also copy between most audio and video formats and with
video can transcode between PAL, SECAM (French) and NTSC (USA and
Japan) on the majority of formats. For the School of Literatures,
Languages and Cultures, these facilities are available free of charge
apart from material costs.
Photocopying is available and materials can be comb bound, wire bound
or heat bound.
We supply a television backup service, recording off-air television,
under the ERA University Licence agreement, 7 days a week from 6pm to 2pm.
The channels covered are
BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and BBC4. These recordings are
held for approximately 2 weeks on a hard disc recorder. During
this period, we can supply a copy of any programme, for use in
teaching, that was missed at the time of broadcast. The cost to the
School is the cost of a blank tape/DVD or, if held in the Language Centre
at no cost to the School.
