General Information

Sanskrit can be studied at Edinburgh either as a full MA Honours degree or a joint MA Honours degree with Greek, Latin or Linguistics. In addition, both Sanskrit and the two general courses offered by the department (Indian Civilisation 1 and Indian Religion and Philosophy 2) can be included in curricula for the MA General degree, while courses are alo provided in Hinduism and Buddhism at Honours level for the Religious Studies degree. In addition, the department manages and contributes to a modern- oriented course, South Asian Studies 2. Avestan, Pali and Prakrit are taught in third and fourth year as components of the single Sanskrit honours degree.

The Sanskrit Department at Edinburgh is unique in Scotland (and one of only four in Britain). Its two members of staff teach a wide range of topics in the field of Indology from pure languge study to religion. Their research publications also reflect this wide coverage, with both having published books on literature and religion. The size of the department ensures informality and the bulk of classes are treated as tutorials.

The Sanskrit 1 class will usually contain between six and a dozen students, with half or less that number in Sanskrit 2, while the numbers going into Sanskrit honours (single or joint) and subsequent graduation do not exceed one or two a year. The Indian Civilisation 1 class is larger, with 30-40 students usually, while Indian Religion and Philosophy 2 course usually attracts 10-20 students. There are about 4-6 students per year for the Honours courses in Hinduism and Buddhism.

The department supervises postgraduate students for the PhD in most fields of Sanskrit and language-based studies within the the faculty of Arts, and it also cooperates with the Faculty of Divinity in the supervision of students whose field of research falls within the area of Religious Studies. Enquiries about possible postgraduate study are always welcome.
