Postgraduate Information

The Department offers research degrees only (M.Sc. by research, M.Litt. and Ph.D.)

Master of Science (by research). Full-time for one year. This is a training course for more advanced research. Assessed course work and examinations on methodology and on a research topic in any subject area offered by the Department, followed by a supervised dissertation in the specific research topic.

Master of Letters. Normally full-time for 24 months, part-time for 36 months. Examination by thesis only on research topic.

Doctor of Philosophy. Normally full-time for 36 months, part-time for 48 months. Examination by thesis only, based on original research.

The research interests of the departmental staff include the Sanskrit epics (Mahabharata and Ramayana) and Puranas, other pre-classical Sanskrit literature, Sanskrit literature and literary theory, Jain Prakrit, the origins of Vaisnavism and Hinduism in general, Theravada Buddhism and Jainism. Supervision in these and related areas can be provided for suitably qualified candidates; normally linguistic proficiency in Sanskrit, Pali or Prakrit to Honours level will be required. The Department also serves as the base for the Centre for South Asian Studies, through which various aspects of modern South Asia can be studied under the supervision of members of the Centre in several departments of the Arts and Social Sciences Faculties. The University Library has a good Indological collection, including the personal library of Prof. A. B. Keith, the noted Sanskritist. Recent publications include (in addition to numerous articles in several journals): J. L. Brockington, Righteous Rama: the Evolution of an Epic (O.U.P., Delhi, 1985) and Hinduism and Christianity (Macmillan, 1992); Paul Dundas, The Sattasai and its Commentators (Torino, 1985) and The Jains (Routledge, 1992).
